Oprah’s Girls are off to College!!!

We all know that I love Oprah, def not a secret :-) . She is one of my professional role models so when I started reading posts about the girls from her academy going off to college I got so emotional, yes I know I don’t know them like that, lol. It seems like just yesterday when the story of her opening the academy in South Africa was a hot topic in the news. The scandal that followed with stories of alleged abuse at the school was heartbreaking for so many people, because it seemed like something with such good intentions was being tainted by the poor decisions of a few people!  So I felt such joy when I read in the Associated Press that 72 of the 75 girls who started at the academy in 2007 are now in college! One of the things I have always loved about Oprah is the value she places on education, and this just seems like such a big win for everyone. For all of us who have gone to college, we know the price tag of a college education can be steep (shout out to everyone still paying off Sallie Mae), so I am glad that these young women will have the opportunity to follow their dreams without the financial burden that a lot of college students have to bear. Check out a short video of the celebration below!

You say “No”, I hear “Not Right Now”

There are very few things in life that I really don’t like, but hearing someone tell me “no” was probably in my list of top 5 things that bothered me. I know it seems kind of weird, but I was just so used to working hard for things and having the results be positive the majority of the time. When things would not go as I had expected, it would take me longer than is necessary (as I now know) to get over them. I think because I, like many other people reading this, hear “no” to a request or idea and it seems so permanent and final that it makes you feel defeated. It wasn’t until I did an interview for the “When I Grow Up” series for the site that I heard something that changed my entire outlook.

Did You Know…

That only 15% of people today meet their spouse in college!  So much for going to college to get a “Mrs.” Degree…

Midnight Snack: Free Is Good!!!

No one loves a happy hour, or a good bar crawl, more than recent college grads. I’ve done my fair share, but even $2.00 tap beer tends to add up after a while. Since we have already established that for the first couple of years out of school, money management is super important, bar crawls and happy hour might have to become a luxury indulgence for a while (I know, the world outside the college bubble is a mean and strange place).

But just because you are on a limited budget does not mean you have to limit your fun. What it does mean, is that you have to think outside the box, and challenge yourself to try new things. Below are some links to free events in a few major cities. If you decide to attend any of the free events, please comment and let me know how it went. Also, if you know of any sites that have free events listed for your specific city, please post the link in the comment section, so that people who live in your area can share in the free fun.
