Midnight Snack: The Cover Letter

A lot of the graduates focus on getting their resume in perfect shape when they are beginning their job search, and while this is a very important part of your job search package, the cover letter, in my opinion, is equally, if not slightly more important, than the resume. Your cover letter is your introduction to someone that has no idea of who you are, and it may help determine if your potential employer ever takes a look at your resume.

The reality for most of you, is that when you get out of school the first job you land will probably be working as someone’s assistant. Granted, they may use some fancy words to describe the position or make it sound more important, but at the end of the day whether you are a “First Year Analyst,” a “Department Assistant,” or an “Executive Assistant,” your primary responsibility is to assist someone. The other reality is that although when you are no longer in school, the first three questions that people ask you no matter where you are, are always the same. 1. What is your name? 2. Where do you work? 3. What do you do? If they like the answer to question 3, they will probably ask question 3b. Do you have a business card? I used to get so annoyed! I just didn’t understand why everyone was so nosey, and truth be told, I didn’t want everyone to know that I was “just” an assistant.
