Video: JK Rowling: The fringe benefits of failure

I wish I could put into words what I felt as I watched this video, but I am not sure that words would do my feelings justice. There are so many little gems in this speech that I don’t even know where to begin. Everything that she talks about is so in line with what I hope to accomplish with this site that I feel so proud and validated in the work that we are doing. In the video, JK talks a lot about failure and fear, something I’m sure we can all relate to, but she also talks about how failure can help you realize things about yourself that you could have learned no other way. I hope this inspires you do something you have been afraid of doing. Special thanks to the kind folks at Creating Money for sharing the video!

Simplicity = Success??

In promoting his new movie Good Deeds, Tyler Perry talks about how simplicity has contributed to his success. I am not going to lie, I am pretty excited to see this movie on Saturday!! Are you making things simple enough?

Listen to your body!

As I sit on my couch sipping tea, smelling like Vicks, I can’t help but laugh at writing this post. Apparently, I like to learn things the hard way, but hey my lessons hopefully help you make better choices. Typically when people have things that they are focused on, it tends to be all consuming. For example, during 2nd semester of senior year, if you do not already have a job secured, you tend to spend the majority of your time thinking about finding a job, submitting resumes to potential employers to get a job, and talking to anyone who will listen about how badly you need to find a job.  The same can be said for recent graduates. We all tend to become obsessed with the one thing we want the most in the moment, without much room for other “less important” stuff (I know it’s not just me, lol).  We feel we can neglect certain things because we are young, full of energy and feel like we can do it all. We got this…apparently not so much, ha!

Results vs. Instant Gratification

I know that as 2010 is coming to a close, everyone is looking at the goals  they made at the beginning of the year to see how well they did or did not do on their goals. I also know that people are starting to think about what they want to list as their resolutions for the upcoming year. I am also in the process of taking stock of my 2010 goals and the things I have accomplished.  2010 was supposed to be my “lets just see what happens” year and it was to a certain extent, but I learned something really important about myself this year,  I learned that I often get results and instant gratification twisted. I know I am not the only who faces challenges with this so lets talk about it and the different ways that this can manifest in your transition from college to the working world.

I’m Obsessed…

I have always had an obsession with success (hey there are worse things to be obsessed with!). I am not only obsessed with my own success, but also the success of others, which is part of the reason that I began But Now What. I am convinced that if people are given access to resources, more often than not, they will do something positive with them. Call me naive, or overly optimistic, but that is how I feel. With the recent Forbes interview with Jay Z and Warren Buffet spreading like wildfire, I know that I am not the only one who is interested in the idea of success.
