The University of Life

It seems another lifetime when I first walked on my college campus.  I remember the sheer joy of being away from home, the excitement of all the new possibilities that lay ahead of me, and let’s not forget the fraternity and sorority parties to attend!

College for me was whet Disneyland is for little kids.  It was an adventure and a chance for me to see and do and to explore.  Of course it would be no time before the years passed by and I found myself out in the real world.

The reality for most of you, is that when you get out of school the first job you land will probably be working as someone’s assistant. Granted, they may use some fancy words to describe the position or make it sound more important, but at the end of the day whether you are a “First Year Analyst,” a “Department Assistant,” or an “Executive Assistant,” your primary responsibility is to assist someone. The other reality is that although when you are no longer in school, the first three questions that people ask you no matter where you are, are always the same. 1. What is your name? 2. Where do you work? 3. What do you do? If they like the answer to question 3, they will probably ask question 3b. Do you have a business card? I used to get so annoyed! I just didn’t understand why everyone was so nosey, and truth be told, I didn’t want everyone to know that I was “just” an assistant.
